Vaccination Policy: Per the City's COVID19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the City requires all employees starting on or after February 11, 2022 to provide proof of vaccination as a condition of employment absent a documented medical and/or religious exemption. Proof of vaccination means that employees are required to be "up-to-date" with regards to the COVID-19 vaccine. Consistent with the Santa Clara County Public Health Order issued on December 28, 2021, "up-to-date" means that employees are required to be vaccinated with the entire recommended initial series of a COVID-19 vaccine (two doses of the Pfizer, Moderna or Novavax COVID-19 vaccine or a single dose of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine).

Salary Information

The annual salary range for Wastewater Mechanic I is $78,998.40 - $96,012.80. The annual salary range for Wastewater Mechanic II is $87,443.20 - $106,600.00. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate's qualifications and experience. (Note: Candidates are typically hired at the level of Wastewater Mechanic I. Candidates may be considered for level II if they possess two years of experience at the level of Wastewater Mechanic I or possess a CWEA Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade II certificate.)

Wastewater Mechanic - Energy and Automation Division

Wastewater Mechanics (also known as Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanic) in the Energy and Automation Division are responsible for operating, maintaining and overhauling the Facility's industrial mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel-ignited/spark-ignited engine driven blowers and/or power generators, gas compressors and gas storage such as commonly found in municipal power plants, natural gas pipeline compressor stations and large marine propulsion systems. The Wastewater Mechanics (Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanics) often work in teams of two while performing preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on Facility equipment. This team provides 24/7 staffing and are typically assigned to rotating shifts including nights, weekends and holidays.

The Cogen Operator / Diesel Mechanics also perform tasks including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Preventive maintenance and inspections of all equipment in the Power and Air (P&A) section.
  • Use precision measuring tools, granite table, non destructive testing, Prussian blue, polishing stones, fitting bearings to shafts.
  • Various welding disciplines (such as arc, tig, mig) as well as oxy-acetylene and plasma/carbon arc cutting.
  • Fabricate specialty tools, obsolete engine parts, and fixtures.
  • Operate bridge cranes, chain falls, lever hoists and all associated rigging.
  • Interpret drawings, service manuals and parts manuals.
  • Operate seat grinder, valve grinder, drill press, band saw, vertical mill, engine lathe, iron worker, sheet metal brake and surface grinder as well as forklift and man lift.
  • Repair and inspect of low and high pressure-piping
  • Work with electricians, instrumentation technicians, painters, HVAC and other mechanics
  • Attend all safety trainings

Physical Requirements

  • Duties require a heavy level of physical exertion, including exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Incumbents may be required to utilize self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) equipment, which requires the ability to pass an annual fit and spirometry test.
  • Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Successful completion of high school, General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience: Two (2) years journey-level experience as a mechanic in hydraulics, wastewater treatment or a closely related industry or in operation, maintenance, repair, and overhaul of mechanical and electrical equipment related to large stationary diesel and spark-ignited engines, and/or power generators;

OR four (4) years' experience assisting Wastewater Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment at a level equivalent to Wastewater Attendant or Assistant Heavy Diesel Equipment Operator/Mechanic with the City of San José.

Acceptable Substitution: Completion of the Attendant Skills Knowledge and Evaluation (SKE) program and completion of the certification as Plant Mechanical Technologist Grade I from California Water Environment Association (CWEA) may be substituted as one (1) year experience assisting Wastewater Mechanics in the maintenance and repair of wastewater equipment at a level equivalent to Wastewater Attendant or Assistant Heavy Diesel Equipment Operator/Mechanic with the City of San José.

Required Licensing: Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license. As a condition of employment in some designated positions, possession of a valid State of California Class A or B driver's license with applicable endorsements may be required in the performance of job duties.
