WATER DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR I/II

Soquel Creek Water District is seeking a Water Distribution Operator I/II to work in our Operations & Maintenance department. This is a full-time, benefitted position. Come join a great team and work for the best!

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Level I (entry level class) of the distribution maintenance series: Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of duties in the maintenance and repair of water distribution systems.

Level II (journey level class) of the distribution maintenance series: Performs the full range of maintenance duties.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Learns and assists in installing, maintaining and repairing water distribution systems, including pipelines, taps, valves, meter services, fire hydrants and related appurtenances and structures; performs construction and maintenance work in District buildings and facilities as assigned.
Excavates and shores trenches; backfills cuts; patches, repairs and resurfaces streets; cleans up work sites.
Clears brush, trims, removes plants, trees and shrubs, performs weed abatement; general grounds keeping.
Observes safe work methods and safety practices related to the work; cones and flags work sites to secure from traffic; uses appropriate safety equipment.
Inspects vehicles and performs minor maintenance; report the need for major repairs and service; fuels and lubricates vehicles and related equipment.
Operates assigned vehicles skillfully and safely; observes safe driving practices.
Operates and maintains a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment related to work.
Learns to read and interpret maps, plans, blueprints and specifications.
Completes basic records related to work performed.
May check on customer complaints regarding low pressure, high pressure, and water quality.
Distributes customer notices.
Responds to emergency situations in off-hours as required.
Level II – Mastery of the above, plus:

Assists contractors and representatives of other utilities with location of District service lines.
Responds to customer complaints regarding low pressure, high pressure, and water quality.
May train and direct the work of others; may act in a lead capacity on specific jobs.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:

Operates District vehicles in field installations and maintenance work.
Must be able to carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds.
Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, climbs and walks over various terrain.
Works in an environment with exposure to dust, dirt, chemicals, pollen and plant irritants (e.g., poison oak), and significant temperature changes between cold and heat.
Communicates orally in face-to-face settings and in the use of two-way radios and telephones.
Uses and has basic skill in the operation of computers, technology applications, office equipment, etc.
Stands and walks for extended time periods.
Hearing and vision sufficient to meet California Department of Motor Vehicle and Department of Transportation (DOT) medical standards.

Qualifications
Equivalent to sufficient formal and/or informal education to provide the necessary reading, arithmetic, and communication skills; previous work experience involving the use of hand and power tools is desirable. Level II: the above plus two (2) years of experience in the construction and maintenance of water distribution systems at a level equivalent to the District's Water Distribution Operator I class.

Knowledge & Skills:
Basic mechanical and hydraulic principles related to pipeline work.
Operation and maintenance of hand and power tools and equipment common to the field.
Safe work methods and safety precautions pertaining to the work.
Basic arithmetic.
Learning to operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
Understanding and following oral and written instructions.
Learning to properly place cones, barricades and warning devices and direct traffic flow.
Performing heavy physical labor.

Special Requirements
Must obtain Class "B" Commercial Driver's License w/Tank endorsement.
Clean driving record (no multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years) and proof of valid insurance coverage.
Must have (Level II), or obtain by timeline specified (Level I) Grade D-2 Distribution Operator Certificate-California Division of Drinking Water.
Ability to perform essential functions of the position: strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; perform sustained heavy physical labor; operate heavy equipment and vehicles, work outdoors in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and exposure to potentially hazardous conditions.
Regularly scheduled on-call, off-hours shifts and non-scheduled emergency response.
Designated as "safety sensitive" under Department of Transportation (DOT) - subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Compensation: $24.95 – $40.60 per hour, Full-Time + mandatory overtime hours
Health Insurance: Medical- We pay 90% premiums (base plan). Dental/Vision – We pay 100% premiums Retirement: CalPERS Classic (2.5%@55) or PEPRA (2%@62) membership with shared contribution.

Note: District does not contribute to Social Security. Deferred Compensation: Voluntary 457 deferred comp retirement savings plan. Life Insurance & LTD: Term Life & Long-Term Disability- We pay 100%. Voluntary additional coverage. Vacation: 12 to 25 paid days depending on length of service. Holidays: 12 paid holidays plus 2 floating holidays. Sick Leave: 12 paid days.
