Senior Water Distribution Operator

Soquel Creek Water District is seeking a Senior Water Distribution Operator to work in our Operations & Maintenance department. This is a full-time, benefitted position. Come join a great team and work for the best!

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

This senior level class must be competent operating a variety of equipment skillfully and safely in various field locations and situations. Operates, makes minor adjustments and repairs to heavy construction equipment used in the construction, maintenance and repair of water system distribution infrastructure. Provides crew leadership.

Operates a backhoe, loader other heavy construction equipment to construct, repair and maintain water mains, lines, roads, right-of-way and other water distribution properties and facilities.
Checks job site for potential hazards, determines precautions for safe equipment operation and performs assignments in accordance with safety requirements and job site conditions.
Drives a truck and trailer to haul equipment to and from jobs.
Inspects equipment, makes operating adjustments and performs minor preventive maintenance and repair; maintains equipment in a clean and orderly condition.
Assigns, directs and reviews the work of crews performing construction, maintenance and repair of distribution systems and facilities; instructs crews in work procedures, safe work practices; monitors work in progress.
Estimates and secures necessary tools, materials and equipment; provides technical assistance to crews; performs the most-skilled duties.
Reads and interprets plans and specifications.
Uses and directs the use of a wide variety of tools and equipment related to work.
Maintains records of time and work performed.
Assists in training new operators.
Performs a variety of general skilled and semi-skilled field maintenance work as a crew member when not assigned to equipment operation or as a crew leader.
Responds to emergency situations in off-hours as required.
Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES Principles and practices of lead supervision and directing the work of crew members assigned. Practices, procedures, methods, tools and equipment used in the construction, maintenance/repair of water distribution systems. Safety practices and precautions pertaining to the work. California Vehicle Code and Construction Safety Orders pertaining to the operation and transport of heavy construction equipment. Operation, work methods and limitations of heavy construction equipment, and service and maintenance of such equipment. Establishing/maintaining effective working relationships; dealing tactfully/courteously with the public Reading plans, survey stakes, elevations and grades, using various methods, technologies and tools. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and two (2) years of water distribution construction and maintenance experience at a level equivalent to the District's Water Distribution Operator II class.

Special Requirements
Class "A" Commercial Drivers License w/Tank endorsement Clean driving record (no multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years) and proof of valid insurance coverage. Grade D-2 Distribution Operator Certificate-Cal. Division of Drinking Water. Must obtain D-3 by timeline specified. Grade T-1 Treatment Operator Certificate-Cal. Division of Drinking Water. Must obtain by timeline specified. Ability to perform essential functions of the position: strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds; perform sustained heavy physical labor; operate heavy equipment and vehicles, work outdoors in all weather conditions, in confined spaces and exposure to potentially hazardous conditions. Regularly scheduled on-call, off-hours shifts, and non-scheduled emergency response. Designated as "safety sensitive" under Department of Transportation (DOT) - subject to DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing requirements.
