Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector/Environmental Compliance Inspector

WCW is seeking a qualified Environmental Compliance Inspector to join the Environmental Services Division of the Water Quality and Resource Recovery Department. The successful applicant will have an established track record of resourcefulness, initiative, and problem-solving skills. The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented self-starter and an excellent communicator who can function with integrity and discretion.

The Environmental Compliance Inspector performs inspections and sampling of industrial, commercial, and residential sources of discharge to WCW's sanitary sewer system to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; inspects hazardous materials storage areas; responds to reports of prohibited discharges; performs water quality testing, and conducts public outreach activities. The selected applicant will understand the importance of developing and maintaining positive working relationships with internal and external customers.

There is currently one vacancy that may be filled at any level of the flexibly staffed classification depending on the qualifications of the applicants.

Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector: $112,658 -$136,942 annually

Environmental Compliance Inspector: $96,642—$119,080 annually

We are looking for someone who is:

What you will typically be responsible for:

Scheduling and inspecting industrial and commercial facilities to ensure compliance with regulations;
Ensuring that all sampling is representative and performed as outlined in the regulations;
Assisting in the development of public outreach materials, including presentations and workshops on compliance with pretreatment and pollution prevention requirements, and promoting public participation in program activities;
Developing and maintaining accurate, complete, and organized records and logs and evaluating reports and information from internal and external customers of the WCW.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of training and experience that demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and can perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed) will be considered. A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

Senior Environmental Compliance Inspector:

Experience:Three years of experience inspecting and sampling industrial and commercial facilities and industrial, commercial, and residential waste streams.

Education:Equivalent to possession of a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in environmental management, environmental engineering, chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or a closely related field.

Required Licenses and Certificates:Possession of a Grade II Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association and completion of the Pretreatment Facility Inspection course offered by the California State University Office of Water Programs is required at the time of appointment.

A valid California State Class C license is required and must be maintained at all times. Continued maintenance of a valid driver's license in compliance with established WCW vehicle operations standards and the ability to be insured for the operation of a vehicle/WCW vehicle in accordance with the terms and conditions of WCW's insurance program are conditions of continued employment.

Environmental Compliance Inspector:

Experience:Two years of experience in inspection and sampling of industrial and commercial facilities and industrial, commercial, and residential waste streams.

Education:Equivalent to possession of an Associate Degree from an accredited college or university with major work in environmental management, environmental engineering, chemistry, bacteriology, biology, or a closely related field.

License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California Driver's License. The incumbent must continue to meet all the provisions of the Driving Policy as a condition of continued employment.

Possession of a Grade I Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association.

Completion of the Pretreatment Facility Inspection course offered by the California State University Office of Water Programs and possession of a Grade II Environmental Compliance Inspector certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association within one year of appointment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT- PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

An employee in this position must be able to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The following describes typical environmental and physical demands:

Performs duties in both an office and field environment utilizing WCW vehicles. Walks on improved and unimproved (uneven) surfaces, bends, stoops, squats, reaches, crouches, and kneels while collecting samples;
Safely lifts and moves objects such as manhole covers weighing up to 50 lbs.;
Climbs stairs and ladders during inspections and uses hands for light grasping and repetitive action involving fine motor dexterity.;
Utilize appropriate safety precautions, methods, and apparatus to minimize and withstand exposure to noise, vibration, heights, cold, heat, wet and humid conditions, outdoor weather conditions, odors, water, dust, fumes, chemicals, electrical and mechanical hazards, pollens, hazardous materials, and domestic waste;
See and hear within normal range with or without correction.
