Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to work within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite, after completion of the probationary period (one year).

The Senior Electrical Engineer will serve as the team leader of the electrical & control group in the Utility Electrical and Control Systems Engineering unit. This position is responsible to lead and review the work of the team members. This position will monitor and control project schedule and expenditures, ensure work quality and schedule adherence to professional codes, standards, and Valley Water specific actions.
Raw water delivery operations depend on the reliable supply of power and timely and accurate execution commands and control data for ensuring delivery of water to Valley Water's water treatment facilities, streams, and our customers. Water Treatment and treated water delivery operations depend on the reliable supply of power and timely and accurate execution of Process Control Systems command and control data for ensuring delivery of safe, clean water to our customers in the Silicon Valley. This position is essential to ensure these operations are successful.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Organize, direct, lead, plan, and review the work of the section/team members, monitor and control project schedule and expenditures, ensure work quality and schedule, ensure adherence to professional codes, standards, and Valley Water specifications. As assigned, assume responsible charge of the review and preparation of engineering studies, reports, design, and contract documents for compliance with professional engineering standards and principles; stamp and/or sign such work to assume project engineering responsibility
  • Direct and participate in the inspection of work by Valley Water, contract, or consultant personnel for conformance to contract specifications.
  • Coordinate electrical & control engineering services with operations, maintenance, capital project teams, consultants, contractors, utilities, and other agencies; resolve issues with customers and partners as necessary.
  • Participate in the development and administration of assigned budgets; participate in the forecast of funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitor expenditures; implement adjustments.
  • Provide project planning and project management services; supervise and participate in project control including progress, schedule, costs forecasts, variances, critical path, change management, annual walk-through, and closeout procedures as assigned; conduct and participate in project review meetings.

Ideal Experience:
Six (6) years of professional engineering experience designing and maintaining industrial electrical systems in an operating environment, preferably in a critical infrastructure environment including at least two (2) years of lead responsibility.

Lead experience should include: supervising, leading and/or overseeing:
  • Planning, designing, and inspecting all phases of industrial electrical distribution engineering projects.
  • Troubleshooting and repairing existing industrial electrical distribution (both hardware and software).
  • Leading, coordinating and implementing full cycle industrial to electrical distribution projects ensuring no disruption of mission critical operations.
  • Collaborating with project teams to ensure that projects in planning, design, and construction phases are abiding by industrial to electrical distribution standards.
  • Developing technical policies and procedures and making recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.
Ideal Skills and Abilities:
  • Planning, organizing, monitoring
  • Supervision and leadership
  • Technical capability to quality assurance and quality check of electrical engineering deliverable work product.
Ideal Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of operations, services, and activities of a comprehensive electrical distribution systems including computer-based process monitoring and control systems in the area of water production, treatment and distribution systems.
  • Advanced principles and practices of electrical distribution systems design and installation.
  • Electrical distribution systems engineering theory and design concepts for electrical distribution systems.
  • Expert in industrial electrical distribution.
  • Principles and practices of electrical distribution systems network administration.
  • Hardware and software design development and implementation.
Ideal Training and Education:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in electrical engineering or a related field.

Required License or Certificate

  • Possess and maintain a valid license as a Professional Electrical Engineer issued by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license. Individuals who do not meet the driver's license requirement due to a disability will be considered for a reasonable accommodation on a case-by-case basis.
