ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting for two (2) part-time Office Assistant I positions in the Public Works Department. This position will work 20 - 25 hours per week. The work hours will be Monday - Friday during daytime hours. There may be rare occasions that the Office Assistant will be asked to work alternate hours. In addition, this recruitment process may be used to fill future part-time and/or temporary Office Assistant I positions in any City department.

Under the direct supervision of the Management Analyst, the part-time Office Assistant will provide a broad range of administrative support duties. The Office Assistant must be highly organized, detailed oriented, and efficient and effective with the use of their time. Additionally, the person filling this position must be self-motivated, self-directed, committed to quality results, and work in a supportive team and fast pace environment. Having an approachable and friendly demeanor along with excellent customer service skills will help in succeeding in this position.

The goal of the Public Works Department is to continuously promote a better quality of life for those who live, work, and visit the City of Gilroy, accomplished through the provision of efficient engineering and city services and by orderly growth and development.   • Have experience working in a Public Sector office setting.
  • Have excellent customer skills and ensure a welcoming environment for both the residents of Gilroy and internal customers.
  • Truly like performing administrative and clerical support work.
  • Be highly organized and able to carefully track multi-step processes to completion.
  • Have a positive "can-do" attitude with a friendly and approachable demeanor when interacting with others at work.
  • Have strong receptionist skills to greet customers on the phone and in person.
  • Be technologically savvy with strong computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite) and experience with specialized software database systems.
  • Be flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and interruptions throughout the workday.
  • Excel in a fast-paced, demanding work environment and able to take on new tasks with minimal training.
  • Anticipate the needs of customers as well as internal team members, in getting the job done.
  • Have stellar written and verbal communications skills.


QUALIFICATIONS
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to high school diploma or G.E.D. and 6 months of experience in clerical office work.
  • Keyboard at least 40 net words per minute (testing may be required at any stage of the selection process).
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and safe driving record if the nature and duties of the job necessitate driving.
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.
  • Pass an employment background check, including a Department of Justice Criminal record check.
