ENGIE is hiring a Student Intern that will give an opportunity for a college student to apply their academic preparation to practical work experience. This position is created by a Partnership with West County Wastewater and ENGIE to gain necessary experience and training in water quality sampling and laboratory analysis.

The position will work with West County Wastewater for a minimum of 24 hours per week including occasional weekends starting mid-July for 6-8 months. This is not a remote opportunity; the intern will work at the laboratory on site. The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Technical or functional supervision may also be provided by a Laboratory Analyst II.

What you'll do:

  • Perform a variety of routine chemical, biochemical, and bacteriological analyses of water, wastewater, and related solids and liquids relevant to wastewater collection, treatment, and disposal
  • Collect and analyze plant samples, including but not limited to influent, effluent, receiving waters, sludge, and record temperature of samples to ensure acceptable ranges, enter samples into the appropriate log
  • Prepare chemical reagents
  • Calculate and record laboratory test results and enter data
  • Follow established analytical procedures in all activities using standard and routine quality assurance and quality control protocols to ensure compliance with the Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program and the Environmental Protection Agency requirements
  • Assist in the process of maintaining laboratory inventories at appropriate levels
  • Follow all safe work practices at all times
  • Perform related duties as assigned

What you bring:

  • No direct experience is required for this position.
  • Must maintain a GPA of 2.5 & be able to work 24 hours per week.
  • Currently living in Contra Costa County.
  • Read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Principles and practices of modern chemistry, microbiology, and the physical sciences
  • Basic mathematics, algebra, and computer software and spreadsheets as applied to laboratory work
  • Laboratory terminology, procedures, methods, and their use
    • Perform chemical, biological, and bacteriological laboratory
    • Perform mathematical, statistical, geometric, and algebraic calculations common to water quality control laboratory analysis
    • Use effectively and provide proper care for standard laboratory testing and analysis equipment
