ENGIE is hiring a Student Intern to work for West County Wastewater's Environmental Programs Division. This position is created by a partnership with West County Wastewater and ENGIE through the Clean & Green Project a multi-year upgrade project at the Water Quality Resource & Recovery Plant in Richmond. This student internship program will employ a multi-faceted learning program and will give an opportunity for a college student to apply their academic preparation to practical work experience

The position will work with West County Wastewater for a maximum of 20 hours per week including occasional weekends starting mid-October for 3 months.

What you'll do:
  • The intern will work in the Environmental Programs Division assisting with inspections, sampling, compliance, and pollution outreach and education. Students will learn and work within the SwiftComply FOG program application
  • Assist with environmental compliance inspections, travel within the district to visit manufacturers and businesses
  • Assist with sampling
  • Work on social media campaigns, prepare for and attend outreach events
  • Interns may also assist with development and execution of inventory tracking, electronic filing and use a variety of computer programs. Additional duties include:
    • Observe and take notes on the planning, organization, and implementation of environmental compliance programs, including but not limited to industrial pretreatment and pollution prevention
    • Assist with the planning, scheduling, and performing of sampling of industrial, commercial, and residential discharges
    • Plan, schedule, and assist with visits to industrial and commercial facilities to assure compliance with regulations
    • Investigate and trace sources of illegal or undesirable discharges entering the District's wastewater collection system and evaluate instances of pass through, interference, or upset to the treatment plant
    • Assist with the preparation and documentation of all facets of inspection and sampling events
    • Assist with the tracking and documentation of issues until compliance is achieved
    • Assist with the development of public outreach materials, including presentations and workshops on compliance with pretreatment and pollution prevention requirements, and promote public participation in program activities
    • Represent WCW by providing information and assistance to other agencies, the industrial, commercial and residential community and to the general public
    • Develop and maintain accurate, complete and organized records and logs and evaluate reports and information from internal and external customers of the District
    • Operate, clean, maintain, and calibrate sampling, monitoring, and field equipment
    • Perform related duties as assigned

What you bring:
  • Must be 18 years or older and currently enrolled in a local accredited college or university in a major related to the assignment, or currently enrolled in a local graduate degree program with a major related to the assignment
  • This position is for students in STEM programs, or studying Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Science, or biology programs or pathways
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements as stated in West County Wastewater's Employee Handbook
  • Communicate effectively, both written and verbally
  • Handle and prioritize multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to use a personal computer and various software to perform duties, calculator, and other office equipment
  • Ability to lift or carry weight up to 20 lbs. or less
  • Ability to work remotely, as needed
