Community Projects Review Unit (Position Code 1088)

Engineering Technician I: $6,080.53 - $7,786.13 monthly
Engineering Technician II: $6,708.00 - $8,586.93 monthly

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to work within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.

Overview:Are you looking to make a difference in your community by ensuring that over 1.9 million people are provided a reliable, clean and environmentally sustainable water supply? Valley Water is looking for a highly talented and motivated Engineering Technician I/II who will work in the Community Projects Review Unit in the Watersheds division.

External land development projects are referred to Valley Water for review, many of which are adjacent to or modify Valley Water facilities. The Community Projects Review Unit reviews these developments for impacts to our interests. Under the supervision of the Supervising Engineering Tech, this position will support the functions of the unit, including processing applications for review by the Supervising Engineering Tech or Engineers, updating/maintaining unit GIS layers, preparing permits/letters, and providing customer service in person, via email and over the phone.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Processing applications for review by Supervising Engineering Tech/Engineer
  • Updating/maintaining unit's GIS layers
  • Scanning and archiving files
  • Customer service and providing information to the public including phone duties, emails, and Access Valley Water tickets
  • Providing support to engineering staff, including permit preparation as needed, researching historical documents, and providing location information
  • Providing support for Valley Water's Underground Service Alert Program
  • Preparing permits and letters

IDEAL EXPERIENCE:
For Engineering Technician I:
  • Providing outstanding customer service to the public, including answering inquiries.
  • No professional work required.
For Engineering Technician II:
In addition to the ideal criteria for Engineering Technician I:
  • 2+ years of experience
  • Reading engineering plans, survey documents, deeds or similar.
  • Producing maps, drawings and other technical documents in GIS.
IDEAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
For Engineering Technician I:
Perform administrative duties such as drafting letters, drafting permits, answering phone calls

For Engineering Technician II:
In addition to the ideal criteria for Engineering Technician I:
  • Perform administrative duties such as drafting letters, drafting permits, answering phone calls.
  • Perform property research activities, including boundary determination and land title examination.
IDEAL KNOWLEDGE:
For Engineering Technician I:
Basic methods of conducting research.

For Engineering Technician II:
In addition to the ideal criteria for Engineering Technician I:
  • Basic principles of GIS.
  • Basic principles of surveying.
Ideal Training and Education:
  • No professional experience required for the Engineering Technician I.
  • 2+ Years of professional experience is required for the Engineering Technician II.
  • Ideal candidate will have a bachelor's degree in a related field.


Required License or Certificate

Selection Process

COVID-19 vaccination requirement:
* Fully vaccinated means (1) it has been at least two weeks since a person has completed the entire recommended series of a COVID-19 vaccine, and (2) the person has provided proof of vaccination in a form consistent with the requirements for verification of vaccine status in the State of California's July 26, 2021 Public Health Officer Order.
