We are hiring a Climate Smart Intern!


LOCATION: San José City Hall 200 E. Santa Clara St, San Jose, CA 95113.


TERM OF ASSIGNMENT: June 2024 to approximately June 2025


HOURS PER WEEK: Up to 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 35-40 hours per week during school breaks. Occasional evening/weekend hours may be needed. (part-time)


COMPENSATION:


Undergraduate Salary Range is $14.58 - $20.83/hr. part-time and unbenefited.


Graduate Salary Range is $18.87 - $27.87/hr. part-time and unbenefited.


These Salary Ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable pay. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

About the Internship


The City of San José, the Capital of Silicon Valley, is one of the nation's best managed cities and one of the top ten cities in which to live, work, and do business. The Environmental Services Department's (ESD) Climate Smart division was adopted by the San José City Council in 2018. Climate Smart lays out how the City of San José is doing its part to address climate change. It's a community wide initiative to reduce air pollution, save water, and improve quality of life.


The Climate Smart Team is seeking one (1) undergraduate or graduate student intern to help support many of the sustainability focused projects undertaken by the City of San José. Duties may include but are not limited to:



  • Building Performance Ordinance Support: monitoring and responding to communications from customers, evaluating participation and compliance of covered buildings, updating, and developing educational collateral and training documents, data entry and management through spreadsheets and the program's Customer Relationship Management (CRM) System, assessing the program and making suggestions for improvement/streamlining of procedures.

  • Community Engagement and Outreach Support: staffing events and/or tables at community sites (e.g., libraries or community centers) to promote City programs and available incentives (e.g., DIY toolkit, induction cooktops, GoGreen Teams, rebates, the Accelerator program).

  • Data Compilation & Analysis: in support of City initiatives including the communitywide greenhouse gas inventory and American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) reporting.

  • Desktop and Field Research, which may include:


    • Conducting research and gathering data to support Climate Smart initiative evaluation, process improvements, and/or policy development.

    • Traveling in-person to neighborhoods and/or buildings to gather detailed building inventory and equipment data to inform the City's Climate Smart outreach and programming.

    • Conducting interviews with various community members (e.g., residents, community-based organizations, contractors) to inform future programming and outreach needs.


  • The ideal candidate will have demonstrated interest in environmental work either through their major, classes taken, or extracurricular activities.

  • This position is anticipated to work in a hybrid telework schedule - working remotely and onsite at San Jose City Hall. This work schedule can change based on supervisory approval and/or City policy.



Minimum Qualifications


Undergraduate: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program.


Graduate: Completion of a Bachelor's Degree and current enrollment in a Master's Degree program from an accredited college or university.


Experience: None.


Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.
