CHEMIST I


ENVIRONMENTAL & REGULATORY COMPLIANCE DIVISION - LABORATORY


Temporary/Term-Limited Position
Salary: $49.21 per hour



Central San, a progressive public utility in the East Bay area of the San Francisco region, is seeking a temporary lab assistant to provide support to the District's Laboratory.



The position is for 40 hours per week on-site work and a duration of one year. The selected candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Supervising Chemist. Functional supervision may also be provided by the Chemist I-III.



Duties of the position will be carried out on-site and include:


Perform a variety of routine chemical, biochemical, and microbiological laboratory analyses such as (but not limited to): total suspended solids, total solids, carbonaceous biochemical oxygen demand, enterococci, e.coli, and total/fecal coliform.


Operates a variety of laboratory equipment including gas chromatography/mass spectrometer (GC-MS), spectrophotometers, segmented flow analyzer (SFA), Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometer (ICP-MS), extraction devices, incubators, turbidimeters, and autoclaves.


Collect samples at various treatment plant locations and record prescribed field information on chain of custody forms


Perform sample login and sample receipt procedures


Prepare chemical reagents


Calculate and record laboratory test results, enter data, and generate reports


Follow established analytical procedures in all activities to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements


Follow safe work practices at all times


Other related duties may be assigned as necessary


Successful candidate must be able to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 30 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds


Work may include shifts, weekends, and holidays in emergencies



Education and Experience:


Bachelor degree in Chemistry, Microbiology, or closely related field.


18+ months of lab experience is highly desirable.


Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
