Wastewater Plant Operator (Entry Level Position)

This is an exciting opportunity for someone who wants to get into wastewater treatment or learn new skills in the operation and maintenance of an award-winning plant. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Wastewater Plant Operator is a technical position that learns the principles and practices of wastewater treatment and how to perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks in routine operation and maintenance of the District's wastewater collection system and treatment plant, including biological nutrient removal (BNR), anaerobic digestion, and ultraviolet (UV) disinfection processes. Learns the daily operational controls and monitoring of plant processes, including maintaining appropriate records and logs.

This is the entry level position in the wastewater plant operator series that receives on-the-job training and experience while performing routine duties, in a team environment, on an assigned shift under supervision. As experience and proficiency are gained, assignments will become more varied and difficult with an increase in responsibility and self-performance. Incumbents may advance to the higher-level class after gaining the knowledge, skills, experience, and certifications that meet the qualifications for and demonstrate the ability to perform the work of the higher-level class.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The following are minimal qualifications necessary for entry into the classification.

Education:
A high school diploma or equivalent; Associates degree or higher is desirable.

AND

Experience:
No experience is required; however, experience in a secondary wastewater treatment plant is highly desirable.

OR

An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which has provided the required knowledge, skills/abilities, and attributes and is able to perform the work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed).

License/Certificate:

  • Ability to obtain an Operator in Training certificate will be required immediately upon hire.
  • Possession of a Grade I California Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate within two (2) years of hire is required.
  • Possession of a CWEA Mechanical Technologist, Electrical & Instrumentation Technologist, Lab Analyst, Collection System Maintenance, or certificate is desirable.
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required, and safe driving record.

Failure to possess and maintain the required license(s) and/or certificate(s) may be cause for discipline up to and including termination.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Background Checks: The District may conduct a background check and a reference check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class.
  • Independent Travel: Incumbents are required to travel independently, for example, to perform work at other work sites, to attend meetings with other District employees, to attend meetings with community organizations, etc.
  • Hours of Work: Incumbents may be required to work weekends, holidays, irregular hours, and after normal business hours.
