Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District (FSSD), an innovative and award-winning public agency, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Accounting Intern. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in governmental accounting while supporting a forward-thinking organization dedicated to sustainability, resource recovery, and protecting vital waterways like the Suisun Marsh.

As an Accounting Intern, you'll work alongside a knowledgeable and supportive team of finance professionals at our award-winning facility. Under the direct supervision of a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA), your experience may count toward the general accounting experience requirement for individuals pursuing CPA licensure in California.

This internship offers exposure to public sector accounting practices, budget development, financial reporting, internal controls, and other essential functions that support our operations. In addition to assisting with key tasks, you'll learn how financial management plays a critical role in maintaining vital public infrastructure.

The ideal intern candidate has/is:

  • An accounting background through their course of study, including completion Principles of Financial Accounting AND Intermediate Accounting, or equivalent coursework.
  • Enthusiastic for the work and is considering a career in accounting or finance.
  • Experience with Excel and data analysis
  • Interested in applying knowledge from accounting coursework to real-world processes.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The Accounting/Finance Intern will gain valuable hands-on experience by assisting with month-end close processes. Depending on the workload during month-end, the intern may also assist with routine Accounts Payable tasks or engage in other administrative projects, such as records management and scanning.

Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with month-end journal entries to ensure timely financial reporting
  • Supporting the preparation of monthly and annual financial reports
  • Assisting in account reconciliations
  • Analyzing financial data and identifying discrepancies or variances
  • Helping with audit preparation and ensuring compliance with internal controls
  • Gaining exposure to fund accounting and government financial systems
  • Contributing to administrative tasks, including records management

This is a unique opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to real-world public sector accounting tasks while learning about the financial operations of a local government agency.

HOURS OF WORK

This internship offers flexible hours, with an ideal structure of 20 hours per week—spending the first two weeks of the month on month-end close tasks, and the remaining weeks assisting with Accounts Payable and other projects. The internship is for a maximum of six months and/or 999 hours per fiscal year in accordance with the District intern policy. The internship is anticipated to start in August 2025 and end in Winter 2025/Spring 2026.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which has provided the required knowledge, skills/abilities, and attributes and is able to perform the work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed).

We are seeking an intern who has completed at least two (2) full years of coursework (90 quarter units or 60 semester units) toward or has earned an Associate's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field by June 2025 and meets the following qualifications:

  • Solid foundation in accounting principles, including financial accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.
  • Completion of Intermediate Accounting is preferred, but equivalent coursework or relevant experience in accounting will be considered.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial tasks and reports.
  • Ability to apply basic accounting concepts in real-world settings.


PLEASE NOTE: A copy of your transcripts or degree are required (see "How to Apply" section below). As long as you have or will have completed the requirements above by June 2025, you will not be disqualified.

No prior experience is required for this opportunity, but please include any relevant experience on your application. The following skills are desired and will be given careful consideration:

  • Microsoft Excel - Intermediate level proficiency, including data analysis and spreadsheet management
  • Microsoft 365 and applications - Intermediate level proficiency with a focus on Word, Outlook, and Excel
  • Accounting software - Experience with accounting platforms or ERP systems is a plus.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Mobility and Dexterity: Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling (i.e., sense of touch), and repetitive motion.
  • Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, and Pulling: Employees in this class will be exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Vision: Positions in this class require the employee to have close visual acuity, with or without correction, to prepare and analyze data and figures, transcribe, view a computer terminal, read, etc. Positions in this class also requires employees to have depth perception to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Hearing/Talking: Positions in this class require the employee to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction and have the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication. Positions in this class require the employee to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
  • Working Conditions: While most work will be in an office setting, visits to outdoor worksites will require an employee in this class to occasionally work outside and be subject to a variety of weather conditions, walking on uneven terrain, and working around vehicles in operation and around machinery with moving parts. Employees in this class may be required to operate a vehicle and thus will be subject to traffic hazards while driving.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Background Checks: The District may conduct a background check and a reference check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class.

  • Independent Travel: Incumbents are required to travel independently, for example, to perform work at other work sites, to attend meetings with other District employees, to attend meetings with community organizations, etc.

  • Must possess a valid Class C, CA State drivers license and insurance, and demonstrate a good driving record
