Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District (FSSD) is currently seeking a candidate to fill an Engineering Internship. This intern will work with an amazing team of inspectors, technical staff, and engineers at our award-winning facility. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience working in the wastewater/stormwater industry to learn the importance of these utilities and be part of a helpful team.


We are dedicated to protecting our community's water resources, including the Suisun Marsh, and we are excited to work with, and mentor, the next generation of engineers! As our teammate, you will be gaining exposure to Engineering practices, and treatment and conveyance facility Operations and Maintenance. We have a wide variety of critical tasks that we need your help with. In addition, we want to teach you about our industry, and show you why wastewater/ stormwater careers are meaningful, vital, and worthy of your pursuit.

  • Is self motivated and is able to manage their time and priorities to stay on task; knows when to reach out when they need help or have questions.
  • Passion for learning, new experiences, and wants to work in an atmosphere of growth.
  • Enjoys observing how systems operate and brainstorming improvements in a team setting.
  • Completed coursework in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or Construction Engineering fields.
  • Enjoys supporting field work (i.e. taking field measurements and observations; communicating with staff, contractors, and vendors, etc.)

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The intern will participate in a variety of projects and activities to gain hands-on engineering experience in the Wastewater and Stormwater Facilities.

  1. Support a variety of critical and skill appropriate tasks and projects around the facilities including coordinating and/or supporting details for miscellaneous replacements, performing entry-level hydraulic and mechanical calculations, and researching record/ historical information.
  2. Provide support to Engineering department staff in specific tasks including reviewing and documenting construction and making critical updates to the District's GIS maps, assisting with engineering design and red-line drawing updates using AutoCAD, managing construction photos and documentation, collecting measurements, facilitating construction project communications, and updating project SharePoint sites.
  3. Work with other departments and learn that various skill sets must collaborate to operate a successful organization.
  4. Learn about public works contract administration (bidding, project award, etc.)

Throughout the internship, you will work on projects to:
  1. Gain hands-on experience real-life experience in the areas of mapping, planning, design, construction, etc.
  2. Appreciate the importance and significance of the wastewater/ stormwater industries.
  3. See what makes wastewater/stormwater industry an interesting and fun career path and choose to join the industry.
HOURS OF WORK

This internship will be onsite between 24-40 hours per week, for a maximum of six months and/or 999 hours per fiscal year in accordance with the District intern policy. The internship is anticipated to start Summer 2025 and end Fall or Winter 2025.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

An equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which has provided the required knowledge, skills/abilities, and attributes and is able to perform the work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed).

We are seeking an intern that has two (2) full years (90 quarter units or 60 semester units) completed towards or has obtained a Bachelor's of Science or Master's of Science by June 2025 in one of the following degrees in the last six (6) months:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Construction Engineering

PLEASE NOTE: A copy of your transcripts or degree are required (see "How to Apply" section below). As long as you have or will have completed either of the requirements above by June 2025, you will not be disqualified.

No experience is required for this opportunity but please list any relevant experience on your application. The following skills are desired and will be given careful consideration:
  • AutoCAD - Intermediate level proficiency
  • ESRI ArcGIS - Intermediate level proficiency
  • Microsoft SharePoint - Intermediate level proficiency for creating and maintaining sites and metadata
  • Microsoft 365 and applications - Intermediate level proficiency
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Background Checks: The District may conduct a background check and a reference check on candidates prior to appointment to a position within this class.
  • Independent Travel: Incumbents are required to travel independently, for example, to perform work at other work sites, to attend meetings with other District employees, to attend meetings with community organizations, etc.
  • Must possess a valid Class C, CA State drivers license and insurance, and demonstrate a good driving record
