As part of the Valley Water community, you get an insider's perspective on the way we work and the impact we are able to make. The Summer 2025 Internship Program will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while either working on-site or hybrid. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.
About The Watersheds Design & Construction Unit 1:
The Unit is responsible for design and construction of Watershed capital improvement projects in flood protection and creek restoration. The unit oversees engineering and environmental documents, design and construction plans, construction bid packages and secures necessary environmental and construction permits.
INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. For hybrid work, intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date.
Required License or Certificate
WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
- Students pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or related fields.
- Completed coursework in Water Resources, Hydrology/Hydraulics, Construction management, Intro Structural Engineering, Intro Geotechnical Engineering, and Fluid Mechanics.
- Experienced with using GIS, AutoCAD, and/or HEC-RAS a plus but not required.
- Able to problem solve and communicate effectively.
- Organized and able to manage time effectively to support multiple projects and deadlines.
- Eager to assist in the design and construction phases of flood control, public works, and environmental projects.
- Detail-oriented and capable of reviewing project plans, specifications, and reports.
- Interested in learning about geotechnical, civil, or structural design methodologies.
- Able to research and apply engineering principles to real-world water infrastructure projects.
- Adaptable and ready to take on a variety of tasks to support flood protection.
- Curious and proactive in seeking solutions to engineering challenges.
- Excited to gain hands-on experience in public sector water resource projects.
AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
- Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.
- Assist with the planning, design, and construction of flood protection and infrastructure projects under the guidance of experienced engineers.
- Support project teams by gathering data, reviewing engineering drawings, and preparing technical documents.
- Conduct site visits to observe construction activities and collect project-specific information.
- Assist in reviewing contractor submittals, design changes, and cost estimates to ensure compliance with Valley Water standards.
- Collaborate with environmental staff to support regulatory compliance, permitting processes, and environmental impact assessments.
- Help prepare reports, presentations, and materials for internal meetings and public outreach events.
- Engage with consultants, engineers, and stakeholders to gain insight into public sector water resource projects.
- Participate in quality control and assurance processes for project planning, design, and construction phases.
- Develop hands-on experience in civil engineering principles, construction management, and environmental permitting with mentorship and professional guidance.
- Creating maps and layers in GIS and CADD
Selection Process
ELIGIBILITY:
The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2025.
- Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.
- Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.
- Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program
- May 27 - August 15, 2025 (Semester Students)
- June 16 - September 5, 2025 (Quarter Students)
