The Summer 2025 Internship Program will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while either working on-site or hybrid. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.

About The Environmental Mitigation & Monitoring Unit:

The Environmental Mitigation and Monitoring Unit is responsible for: managing long-term mitigation monitoring programs for Valley Water; ecology-oriented stewardship for Safe Clean Water Programs; land management and easement monitoring for mitigation lands; providing biological subject matter expertise to support over 30 capital projects and long-range planning programs; oversight of the plant pathogen program; and managing the Fisheries and Aquatic Habitat Collaborative Effort (FAHCE). Unit staff provide ecological and biological expertise supporting Valley Water activities, projects, and programs to effectively manage natural resources and comply with environmental laws and regulations. The Unit specializes in special-status species, jurisdictional habitats, impact and habitat function assessments, avoidance and minimization measures, mitigation design and monitoring, and environmental permitting and stewardship.

INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. There is a chance the intern will need to be onsite for more than 60%, depending on fieldwork needs. For hybrid work, intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date.

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
  • Students pursuing a Bachelor's in degree in biology, ecology, botany, zoology, fisheries, or a related discipline in the life sciences.
  • Experience working with the local flora and fauna of Santa Clara County.
  • GIS experience/data analysis is a plus.


AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
  • Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.
  • Conduct biological monitoring for Mitigation and Monitoring projects.
  • Perform fisheries and wildlife surveys, plant and habitat mapping/monitoring, riverine CRAM field assessments, and conservation easement monitoring.
  • Provide planning, design, and construction biological support for Capital Projects.
  • Conduct data entry/analysis, reporting, and equipment maintenance/management.


Selection Process


ELIGIBILITY:

The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2025.
  • Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.
  • Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.
  • Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program
  1. May 27 - August 15, 2025 (Semester Students)
  2. June 16 - September 5, 2025 (Quarter Students)
