The Summer 2025 Internship Program will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while either working on-site or hybrid. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.

About The Community Projects Review Unit:

Valley Water manages 10 dams and surface water reservoirs, 108 miles of levees, 393 acres of groundwater recharge facilities, 140 miles of water transmission pipelines, three water treatment plants, three pump stations and 278 miles of stream channels. To protect these assets, the Community Projects Review Unit administers the Water Resources Protection Ordinance using the Water Resources Protection Manual, provides cost-sharing for good neighbor fencing, facilitates land use transactions and joint use agreements, and offers technical assistance to land use agencies for applying Guidelines and Standards for Land Use Near Streams.

The Community Projects Review Unit is responsible for administering the permitting process for projects impacting Valley Water's right-of-way and facilities per the Water Resources Protection Ordinance. This unit also implements the Underground Service Alert program, investigates encroachments, facilitates Valley Water's review and comments to land development proposals, updates Valley Water's land right maps, and disseminates water resources and creek stewardship knowledge in response to public inquires.

INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. For hybrid work, intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date.

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
  • Students pursuing a degree in civil engineering or a related field.
  • Interested in applying engineering principles and practices to solve water resource and infrastructure challenges.
  • Interested in researching and reviewing construction plans, specifications, and engineering documents as they relate to the creeks, pipelines, and facilities managed by Valley Water.
  • Able to analyze, interpret, and summarize technical data and engineering information effectively.
  • Proficient in performing engineering and statistical calculations to support project evaluations and decision-making.
  • Capable of making sound, independent decisions within established guidelines and best engineering practices.
  • Possesses knowledge of office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications, including proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communicators with the ability to collaborate effectively and build relationships with internal teams and external stakeholders.


AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
  • Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.
  • Assist with reviewing and commenting on development projects, civil drawings, and hydraulic analyses to support Valley Water's planning efforts.
  • Research property records and identify appropriate permit conditions to ensure compliance with Valley Water's interests.
  • Assist with evaluating environmental assessments for potential impacts on Valley Water infrastructure and resources.
  • Assist with preparing written correspondence and communicating with internal staff, external agencies, and the public.
  • Assist with supporting Valley Water's Underground Service Alert Program and responding to public records requests.
  • Assist with reading and interpreting flood maps to provide information to the public.
  • Assist with preparing documents related to land rights, joint-use agreements, and infrastructure protection.
  • Participate in site visits to obtain a more holistic understanding of Valley Water's operations.


Selection Process


ELIGIBILITY:

The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2025.
  • Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.
  • Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.
  • Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program
  1. May 27 - August 15, 2025 (Semester Students)
  2. June 16 - September 5, 2025 (Quarter Students)
