The Equipment Mechanic I/II is responsible for performing skilled and semi-skilled preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on gasoline, diesel-powered, and alternative technology vehicles, including heavy/light construction equipment. This role involves utilizing power and hand tools, interpreting technical documentation, and ensuring all work aligns with safety and quality standards.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Performs preventative maintenance, safety inspections, and repairs to gasoline or diesel-powered heavy equipment, trucks, construction equipment, and passenger vehicles.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses computer control system components using scanners or laptop with Original Equipment software applications.
- Maintains and repairs other equipment such as trailers, auxiliary engines, pumps, steam cleaners, air compressors, generators, ATVs, forklifts, marine equipment, and related equipment.
- Removes, disassembles, repairs, and replaces a variety of parts including transmissions, clutches, differentials, axles and suspension, pneumatic and hydraulic brake systems, hydraulic systems, ignition and electric al systems, electronic and computer control systems, steering and control systems, air conditioning/climate control systems, tracks and assemblies, various electrical devices/units, body parts and attached equipment.
- May be required to make repairs/service to Fleet equipment and vehicles at remote location or worksites.
- Operates equipment and vehicles after repair to insure safe and complete repairs.
- Conducts annual safety inspections required under California State laws on equipment.
- Performs acetylene, TiG, MiG, stick welding; performs plasma cutting and repairs to vehicles and fabrication of equipment attached to vehicles.
- Repairs and installs special equipment such as body up-fits, extra lights, controllers, and instrument panels.
- Prepares and maintains related records via Maximo or a similar tracking system.
- May prepare schedules of repairs for a limited amount of equipment.
- Identifies and may order replacement parts and make recommendations as to cost of repairs.

Applicants whose experience and background best match the ideal experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and education are considered ideal candidates for the position. To determine the top candidates, each applicant will be assessed based on the ideal candidate criteria as listed below.
Ideal Experience:
- One to Three plus years of automobile (medium and heavy trucks), mechanical equipment and construction equipment repair and maintenance experience (5+ years preferred)
- Proficient with tools, equipment and procedures used in the service, repair and adjustment of automobiles, specifically medium and heavy trucks and construction equipment and gas and diesel powered equipment.
- Ability to troubleshoot and diagnose problems and causes in automotive in automotive, diesel construction and familiarity with hydraulic systems and the ability to do routine welding and fabrication work.
- Hands-on experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel vehicles.
- Experience working with a variety of equipment, including light/heavy trucks, construction machinery, and power-driven tools.
- Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing automotive systems such as fuel, ignition, electrical, hydraulic, and braking systems.
- Familiarity with using diagnostic tools, service manuals, and technical schematics to troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues.
- Proven ability to perform safety inspections, road tests, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems operation and maintenance, including troubleshooting and repair.
- Background in occasional welding, minor fabrication, and repairing or replacing component parts on vehicles or equipment.
- A track record of effectively working independently or under limited supervision in a mechanical repair or maintenance role.
- Experience with updating maintenance work orders via maximo or similar tracking system.
Ideal Skills and Abilities:
- Proficient in troubleshooting mechanical issues and repairing complex systems.
- Skilled in using tools and diagnostic equipment for maintenance and repair.
- Skilled in utilizing work order software to track work and proper documentation of services performed.
- Ability to perform welding, fabrication, and hydraulic system maintenance.
- Strong communication skills to understand and follow instructions effectively.
- Capable of working independently and as part of a team.
Ideal Knowledge:
- Knowledge of principles, practices, methods, and materials used in the servicing and maintenance of automobiles, medium and heavy trucks, and construction equipment.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques of troubleshooting/ diagnosing equipment malfunctions and equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices
- Knowledge of Tools, equipment and procedures used in the service, repair and adjustment of automobiles, medium and heavy trucks and construction equipment gas and diesel powered equipment.
- Basic principles, practices, methods, and materials used in the servicing and maintenance of automobiles, medium and heavy trucks, and construction equipment.
Ideal Training and Education:
Equipment Mechanic I
Training:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
- One (1) year of experience performing repair and maintenance of vehicles or mechanical equipment.
Equipment Mechanic II
Training:
- Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in equipment repair, mechanics, or a related field.
Experience:
- Three (3) years of experience performing repair and maintenance of vehicles or mechanical equipment.
Required License or Certificate
Must have a satisfactory driving record, a valid California driver's license, and able to obtain a valid Class A driver's license and required endorsements within six months of appointment.
The following certification, license and training is desirable:
- Valid and current Master Technician ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Certification in Medium & Heavy Truck or Automobile
- Valid and current Class A Commercial driver's license with hazmat, air brakes and tanker endorsements.
- Additional specialized training in equipment repair, mechanics or a related field is desirable.

Facilities & Fleet Unit (Position Code 08)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.
This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
