Qualified persons are invited to apply for a career opportunity in the Workplace Health and Safety section of East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD). This position is responsible for leading and directing the EBMUD-wide health and safety program for approximately 2,000 employees for both our water and wastewater operations. This position plans, manages and coordinates workplace health and safety for EBMUD; directly supervises a unionized staff of seven health and safety professionals and an administrative assistant including recruitment and hiring of staff, writing performance plans and conducting performance appraisals; and managing performance. Responsibilities include compliance with occupational health and safety regulations; implementation of EBMUD's Injury Illness and Prevention Program; improving the overall safety culture; directing safety programs in areas such as Prevention through Design, NFPA 70E, asbestos and lead, excavation, confined space entry, ergonomics, heat illness, respiratory, fall protection, and occupational medical surveillance. Responsibilities also include compliance auditing and reporting and program development and implementation for a variety of workplace safety, industrial hygiene and training activities. Responsibility for writing and issuing Requests for Proposals; procuring contracts, budget responsibilities, and preparing written documents and presentations for the Board of Directors.
The ideal candidate will have experience managing a Health and Safety Program, as well as direct supervision of health and safety professionals at a water/wastewater utility or similar experience. Additionally, a proven track record of injury and illness reduction, OSHA written program development and implementation, and implementing leading safety indicators. Experience working in a union environment and environmental health and safety certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) is desired.
The annual salary is $161,052 up to $244,260. Initial placement within the range is based upon qualifications. Appointment is typically made at or below the control point ($209,364 per year).

Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, safety engineering, environmental health, business administration, engineering or a related field; and,
- Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in workplace health and safety or technical support services management work. Possession of a Master's degree is desirable and may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
