ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is seeking a dedicated full-time Community Coordinator (CC) within the Gilroy Police Department. This position plays a key role in strengthening community relationships by developing and implementing outreach programs centered around resident engagement, crime prevention, and youth intervention. The CC will collaborate with residents and local organizations to support Gilroy Police Department's mission of fostering a safer, more connected community.
Reporting to the Youth Task Force Coordinator or designee, this position will lead part-time staff and actively engage with community-based organizations (CBOs) and neighborhood residents. The role operates within a collaborative, supportive environment, fostering partnerships among community members, community-based organizations, and various agencies to address community needs and goals.
Based primarily out of the San Ysidro Park Community Center, the Community Coordinator will spearhead initiatives in partnership with the South County Youth Task Force to create safer neighborhoods and enhance resident engagement. Serving as the City's liaison, the Coordinator will work with local organizations, the school district, public safety agencies, business and faith-based groups to provide tailored violence prevention, intervention programs and health equity supports that help youth and their families in Gilroy.
This position presents an ideal opportunity for candidates with experience working with at-promise youth and resource-limited families, to gain valuable experience in public policy, and in development and implementation of co-created social programs at both the city and county levels.
ABOUT THE TEAM
The Gilroy Police Department (GPD) is a dedicated law enforcement agency committed to safeguarding the community's safety and security. Working closely with residents, local organizations, and public agencies, GPD provides comprehensive policing services designed to address community needs. The department prioritizes crime prevention, public safety, and cultivating strong, positive relationships within the neighborhoods it serves. Through active participation in local initiatives—such as community outreach and youth intervention programs—GPD is focused on building trust and fostering a safer, more inclusive community for everyone.

- Possess strong interpersonal and collaboration skills to build lasting partnerships with businesses and residents, promoting trust and resource awareness.
- Have a flexible schedule to participate in outreach events, including evening and weekend hours as needed.
- Have experience with grant writing and funding management to enhance the City's engagement efforts, with meticulous attention to detail for timely and accurate grant reporting.
- Be adaptable, with the ability to adjust strategies pivot in response to changing circumstances, ensuring projects stay on track and deliverables are met.
- Be self-motivated, organized, manage time effectively, and be able to prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines independently.
- Will be bilingual, in Spanish and English, to effectively connect and communicate with community members.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK:
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
- Identify, evaluate and analyze the needs of a targeted community area through meetings with community members, youth, parents, servicing agencies and partnering governmental agencies and other stake holders.
- Plan, organize, coordinate, publicize, implement, and evaluate a wide variety of programs and activities to meet the recreational, educational, physical and social needs in the community.
- Develop effective relationships with residents, community groups, governmental agencies, faith-based groups, local businesses, and public safety organizations to promote activities and encourage involvement in City programs.
- Conducts ongoing surveys, focus groups, forums and needs assessments and analyze information to help meet the needs and interests of the neighborhoods being served.
- Develop, provide new pro-social, anti-drug, violence prevention, recreation and other programs and services to target neighborhood and encourage co-sponsorship opportunities with partnering agencies.
- Organize, supervise and lead employees and groups in a particular recreation or leisure activities.
- Maintain supplies, inventory, and equipment related to assigned program area(s). Follow City purchasing procedures in order to secure needed supplies, inventory and equipment.
- Provide assistance, identify and provide information and referrals for services, special projects and events as assigned.
- Promote department activities and events and complete necessary culturally competent outreach via preparation of appropriate brochures, flyers, and other venues to communicate information.
- Coordinate and oversee program area(s) to insure cleanliness and proper use of facilities and equipment.
- Gather data, maintain records and generate reports, including budget-related reports for assigned program area(s).
- Screen, train, schedule, direct and monitor volunteers, part-time/seasonal staff, and other assigned personnel.
- Participate in related training programs and staff meetings.
- Serve as a liaison to school district and other agencies as needed.
- Pursue and monitor grants and participate in fund-raising events as assigned for program support.
- Perform a variety of clerical and administrative support functions for assigned program area(s).
- Review and document the progress and effectiveness of specific and assigned programs; develop and present recommendations for changes.
- Develop and track program budget(s) and provide input for future budget preparation.
- Provide staff support to various Boards and Commissions as assigned.
- Respond to and resolve inquiries regarding assigned program area(s).
- Ensure that assigned programs and staff function safely and in accordance with City safety standards and policies.
- Assist in recreational facilities operations and maintenance; coordinate scheduling of facilities both internally and externally; and set-up equipment for programs as appropriate and in accordance with City policy.
- Perform related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, social work, ethnic studies, public administration, criminal justice or a related field of study.
- One (1) year of relevant full-time work experience or two (2) years part-time experience (averaging at least 20 hours per week) in a relatable public service, recreation program or with a non-profit organization.
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver license and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).May be required to obtain a Class B license.
- Valid tuberculosis (TB) certificate.
- Must be available to work a varied schedule, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Possess (within 6 months of hire) and maintain a valid First Aid and CPR/AED certification.
- Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
- Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check and background check for employment.
- Prefer non-tobacco user.
- Prefer bilingual (English/Spanish).
