The current opening is for an Assistant Engineer in the Design Division's Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Section, part of East Bay Municipal Utility District's (EBMUD's) Engineering Department. Projects in this division include mechanical and process systems in water treatment plants, distribution pumping plants, reservoirs, pressure regulator and flow control stations, pipelines and hydropower plants.


Assistant Engineers (Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Section) perform a variety of technical mechanical and process engineering assignments supporting the design and operation of a large municipal water supply and wastewater utility. Assistant Engineer is the second level position in the engineering series. All assignments are under direct supervision of registered engineers and provide qualifying experience for professional registration.


With further experience and registration, incumbents may qualify to compete for promotion to Associate Engineer ($148,596 - $180,624 annually).


This position may provide a hybrid onsite and telecommuting option.


The ideal candidate for this position will be prepared to assume project engineering responsibility including planning, budgeting, scheduling, project development and control, interdisciplinary coordination and hands-on design, selection, and specification of process equipment related to water treatment and distribution.


Performance areas common to EBMUD Assistant Engineer (Mechanical and Instrumentation Engineering Section) positions include:


Mechanical and Process Design: Involves the application of engineering knowledge to conduct site investigations, prepare mechanical and process designs and specifications, and perform engineering analyses.


Computer Software Applications: Involves using and applying computer software tools in the performance of a variety of engineering activities ranging from hands on 3D and 2D computer-aided design to spreadsheet-based economic analyses and hydraulic calculations.


Technical Support: Responding to verbal and written requests for engineering field inspections and evaluations. Providing technical support to other departments and engineers and reviewing contractor and vendor document submittals.


The salary range is $11,214 per month increasing to $11,775, $12,364, $12,982, and $13,631 after 6, 18, 30, and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements:
1. A bachelor's degree in an ABET-accredited mechanical, chemical, civil or environmental engineering curriculum, or a California EIT certificate.
2. Two years of professional mechanical engineering experience (subsequent to obtaining the degree) at a level comparable to or higher than EBMUD's Junior Engineer classification. An advanced degree in an accredited mechanical engineering curriculum or California registration as a Professional Mechanical or Civil Engineer may be substituted for one of the required years of experience.
3. Possession of a valid California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
4. Possession of the physical characteristics needed to perform the critical and important duties of the job, and willingness to work overtime as needed is required.
