THE LABORATORY

EBMUD's laboratory is a full-service facility offering services for water, wastewater and solids sampling programs. In addition to compliance reporting under the Clean Water Act and Safe Drinking Water Act, the laboratory staff perform analysis for special projects, and process control programs. The laboratory is in seven-day operations, and the weekend work scheduled is developed on an annual basis. The weekend shifts are made available each year to trained staff on a voluntary basis. When insufficient volunteers are available, newly hired technicians may be required to work one weekend day per pay period with an associated weekday off. Additionally, holiday work and stand-by program are also offered to trained staff on a voluntary basis and could potentially be assigned to trained staff of lower seniority when needed. The stand-by program supports urgent analytical needs during off hours associated with wet weather from November through April annually.

The laboratory is staffed at 35, which includes a diverse collection of technicians, chemists, microbiologists, quality assurance, project managers, supervisors and the laboratory manager. With available vacancies, a typical career path for a Laboratory Technician II may include promotion to Laboratory Technician III, then to Chemist I, Chemist II, Laboratory Supervisor, Research Chemist and Senior Chemist. The laboratory has recently placed into production a state-of-the-art LIMS that will meet the lab's needs for 15-20 years. The laboratory is also embarking on some major updates to its equipment and instrumentation, including a Segmented Flow Analyzer, automated digestion blocks for metals preparation, a new IC for Volatile Fatty Acids and a new Document Management and Processing System.
