Valley Water's mission is to provide Silicon Valley with safe, clean water for a healthy life, environment, and economy. We manage an integrated water resources system that includes the supply of clean, safe water, flood protection, and stewardship of streams on behalf of Santa Clara County's 2 million residents.
Our popular internship program provides excellent opportunities to explore your chosen career path, develop industry-specific skills and knowledge, and increase your professional network! Summer 2022 will be our first-ever hybrid Summer Internship Program and will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while working both on-site and remote. Each intern will have a mentor and will be given professional development training, participate in networking events, attend both virtual and in-person meetings, and prepare a Capstone presentation at the end of the program.
The purpose of the Office of Civic Engagement Unit is to advance and build positive and proactive relationships with the community through engagement, education, and partnerships. The programs and projects in the unit are designed to provide the community with access to resources and opportunities that will help build understanding, trust, and support for Valley Water's goals and mission.
This position is a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite.
Required License or Certificate
WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
- Students pursuing a major in Environmental Studies, Communications, Marketing, Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Business Administration, Ethnic Studies, Arts, or closely related field.
- Advanced grasp of Microsoft Office Suite, including PowerPoint.
- Comfortable engaging new people in any environment.
- Clear and concise communication skills, including public speaking, presentation and writing skills.
- Positive, go-getter attitude and proactive work ethic with a passion to serve the community.
- Strong critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate data and research information to make program recommendations.
AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
- Water Education Outreach: Present educational lessons at summer camps, youth groups, and assist with teacher training workshops, develop and update program materials, prepare educational materials for lessons, develop education toolkits, and order classroom and equipment supplies.
- Volunteer Program: Assist with managing and recruiting new volunteers, setting up new volunteer management system database, develop educational kits and materials for tabling and community outreach events to promote environmental stewardship to youth and families.
- Creek Stewardship: Assist with our Adopt-A-Creek (AAC) program by implementing outreach strategies to gain more active participants to adopt parts of our creeks, collect data on trash collection, maintain AAC website/social media channels, assist with the planning of our Coast Cleanup Day.
- Safe, Clean Water Grants and Partnerships: Assist with conducting outreach for the grants and partnership funding opportunities such as updating flyers, social media, and webpages; provide excellent customer service to build relationships with grantee and partner agencies; review and assess invoices and final grant reports; manage files and data in the online grants management system, and assist with responding to grantee and management inquiries.
- Public Arts: Assist with the development and implementation of a new public arts/mural program by researching best practices for implementation, surveying potential public art sites, supporting the development of public art grants.
- Attend the all-day virtual Intern orientation on Monday, June 13th, 2022.

YOUR MENTORS :
Mera B. is the Valley Water Education Outreach Program Manager. She has more than 15 years of experience working in educational leadership and has served as a STEM educator and project manager for NASA's education programs as lead Professional Development Instructor. At Valley Water, Mera leads a team that provides opportunities for K-12 learners and educators to engage in STEM educational programs through unique content, as well as teaching hands-on activities to various audiences via distance learning. Mera holds a master's degree from Santa Clara University in teaching STEM curriculum development and instruction. When she is not working you can find her hiking, roller skating, or enjoying time with her family.
Ricardo Barajas is a Supervising Program Administrator in the Office of Civic Engagement. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing and a Master in Public Administration. Ricardo has 15+ years of public service experience and began his public service career working at the City of San Jose. Ricardo worked on exciting projects, including the Single-Use Plastic Bag Ban, where he led the outreach efforts in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The ban passed and later became a state law in California, protecting local waterways and the environment for many years to come. At Valley Water, Ricardo has worked for the Communications Unit, leading projects such as the Flood Awareness campaign, Flood Plain Mailer, Budget in Brief, Valley Water eNewsletter, and various other publications. Currently, he supervises the Creek Stewardship Program, Education Outreach Program, and Volunteer Program. When he is not working, you can find him traveling the world (ask him about North Korea), practicing his French, and babysitting his favorite niece and nephew Gabriela and Julian.
Kristen Y. is a Supervising Program Administrator in the Office of Civic Engagement, where she leads a team in administering the Safe, Clean Water Grants and Partnerships Program and the Public Art Program. Kristen has more than 10 years of experience in community engagement, outreach, and project management, spanning across several private and public agencies in California. Kristen holds a Bachelor's degree in Communications/Public Relations with a minor in Business Management from the University of Pacific. She is also a graduate of Valley Water's Emerging Leaders Certification Program and is currently participating in the Asian Pacific American Leadership Institute's Civic Leadership Program. Kristen was born and raised in San Jose and is passionate about serving her community.
ELIGIBILITY:
The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate (Junior or Senior) and higher graduate-level students who will be enrolled in a community college/university for Fall 2022.
- Pass a pre-employment screening process to include a background check
- Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment
- Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program (June to August)

COVID-19 vaccination requirement:
* Fully vaccinated means (1) it has been at least two weeks since a person has completed the entire recommended series of a COVID-19 vaccine, and (2) the person has provided proof of vaccination in a form consistent with the requirements for verification of vaccine status in the State of California's July 26, 2021 Public Health Officer Order.
