In 2021, West County Wastewater (WCW) celebrated its 100-year anniversary and continues to celebrate innovative leadership and a reimagined work culture. West County Wastewater operates a 12.5 MGD wastewater treatment plant and maintains 249 miles of sanitary sewer collection lines, 17 lift stations and six miles of pressure force mains. The District's Strategic Plan was updated in 2021 and continues to serve as the road map for upgrading and maintaining WCW's infrastructure and operations moving forward. WCW maintains 3 lift stations on a contractual basis and works closely with other local partners on operational and maintenance matters.

WCW is seeking to fill two Maintenance Technician vacancies. WCW is seeking a dedicated worker, strategic thinker, results-driven individual who thrives on personal accountability. The Maintenance Technician is responsible for performing a variety of routine maintenance duties in support of the Maintenance Division related to manual labor and skilled work in the installation, maintenance, and repair of all West County Wastewater (WCW) facilities, machinery, and equipment.

What you will Typically be responsible for:
  • Performing semi-skilled and skilled routine diagnosis, maintenance and repairs of all machinery and equipment in the treatment plant and the lift stations.
  • Operating various treatment plant tools, vehicles, and stationery machinery.
  • Installing, repairing, changing, and modifying mechanical and elementary electrical systems.
  • Maintaining records and preparing clear and concise written and oral reports of work performed.
  • Performing building maintenance, grounds maintenance, janitorial activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Incumbents in this classification may perform any combination of duties assigned to this classification. Essential Duties: Depending upon assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain plant and lift station equipment, vehicles and portable equipment including generators, pumps, welders, compressors, lift trucks, and tractors.
  • Operate appropriate machines and tools in repairing pumps, compressors, engines and mechanical equipment and basic electrical systems related to lift stations and the treatment plant.
  • Perform general maintenance duties in the plant and lift stations, including buildings, grounds, and equipment as required.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on treatment plant and lift station equipment, vehicles and portable equipment including generators, pumps, welders, compressors, lift trucks, and tractors.
  • Perform minor repairs on engines, generators and motors.
  • Clean, lubricate, and paint equipment.
  • Perform janitorial work.
  • Install, repair, replace, and modify pumps, controllers, bearings, seals, hydraulic and pneumatic pipes, and mechanical and basic electrical systems.
  • Fabricate parts and structures from a variety of materials. Use a variety of power hand tools, cutting and welding equipment and electrical test equipment.
  • Keep maintenance records.
  • Make oral and written reports of work performed.
  • Operate treatment plant vehicles and stationery machinery, as required..
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of experience and training that demonstrates that a person has obtained the required knowledge and is able to perform the required work (with reasonable accommodation, if needed) will be considered. A person with the following combined training and experience would typically qualify to compete in a selection process:

Experience and Training: Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Three years experience in the repair and maintenance of equipment common to a treatment plant or similar type facility.

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in the maintenance, installation and repair of major mechanical systems.

License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License. The incumbent must continue to meet all of the provisions of the Driving Policy as a condition of continued employment.

Possession of Grade I Mechanical Technology certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association within one year of appointment to the position. Possession of a Grade II Maintenance Mechanical Technology certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association within three years of appointment to the position.

Desirable Qualifications:
  • Great understanding of workplace safety protocols and programs
  • Experience working with a governmental agency or public utility
  • Experience working with a CCMS (computerized maintenance management system)
  • Experience maintaining wastewater treatment equipment or a similar industrial setting
  • Experience with working with Outlook
