ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is excited to announce that we're currently recruiting for a full-time Building Inspector at level I or level II (depending on qualifications and experience). In this opportunity, the Building Inspector will work under the direct supervision of the Building Official and will inspect buildings being constructed, altered and/or repaired to determine compliance with building and zoning laws and ordinances; inspect structures, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations in commercial/industrial buildings and residences for compliance with applicable codes and standards.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The goal of the Building Life & Environment Safety (BLES) Division of the Community Development Department is to provide comprehensive plan checks and inspection services in accordance with local, state, and federal statutes to ensure compliance with various laws and codes designed to ensure the life safety of buildings and people. The Division is a dynamic and tight-knit group of inspectors with a strong sense of camaraderie. The team leverages individual experience and expertise for collaborative problem solving. The group enjoys discussing codes, learning together, and developing new programs and discussing how they can be strategically implemented to effectively serve Gilroy's customers. The team works together cooperatively to achieve designated goals and workplans and utilizes the teams' strengths to achieve optimal results. Under the leadership of Community Development Director Sharon Goei and Building Official Hipolito Olmos, the team is focused on the delivery of quality customer service, streamlining processes, new technology, and building safety.

LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES & CANDIDATE PERSPECTIVE
The person selected for this position will have a prime opportunity to perform the entire range of moderately difficult combination inspections. In the first year, the new Building Inspector will learn the established department mandated consistency in performing work assignments, understand and prioritize daily work assignments to provide effective and efficient results. Furthermore, the new Building Inspector will become familiar with the City of Gilroy's mission and core values, and deliver top of the line customer service.


THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL



  • Have journey level building inspection experience in the public sector.

  • Possess a proficient understanding of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, and the ability to interpret sketches, blueprints and building plans for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.

  • Be knowledgeable with construction and equipment installation methods.

  • Be methodically detailed to ensure that all inspections are compliant with City and State building and zoning codes and ordinances.

  • Effectively communicate both verbally and in writing to interpret applicable laws, ordinances, and codes and to prepare reports and maintain clear and accurate records.

  • Capably perform inspection duties independently in the field and act as a technical resource as needed.

  • Demonstrate dedication, self-motivation, and have a work style that supports teamwork, collaboration and building positive relationships with the general public and other professionals.

  • Be politely assertive when enforcing codes and regulations to meet compliance goals and issuing citations of violations.

  • Be helpful, friendly, professional, and solution-oriented when completing inspections and plan reviews.

  • Possess the following certification for Building Inspector I: B1 - Residential Building Inspector, R5 Combination Residential Inspector Certification from International Code Council (ICC).

  • Possess the following certification for Building Inspector II: C8 Combination Inspector Certification; Building Plans Examiner Certificate from International Code Council (ICC).



Minimum qualifications & Requirements


QUALIFICATIONS
BUILDING INSPECTOR I



  • Minimum of a High School diploma or equivalent and one of the following:

  • One year of experience as an inspector enforcing building construction codes in the public or private sector, OR

  • Two years or more of verifiable half time experience is acceptable, OR

  • Three years of journey-level experience in a related trade.

  • Possess and maintain a current International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC) certification within one year from the date of hire.

  • Possess and maintain a California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).

  • Pass an employment background check, including a Department of Justice criminal record check.

  • Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.

  • Prefer non-tobacco user.



BUILDING INSPECTOR II



  • Possess Residential and Commercial Building, Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing Inspector Certificates from the International Code Council (ICC) OR Certificate of Registration as a Building Inspector and a Certificate as a Combination Dwelling Inspector from the International Conference of Building Officials (I.C.B.O.).

  • Three years of full-time work experience as Building Inspector I or equivalent (equivalency shall be made at the sole discretion of the city of Gilroy).

  • Certified Access Specialist (CASP) Certification highly desired.

  • Certified Building Plans Examiner or other certificates from the International Code Council (ICC) is desirable.

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED AND two years of college course work in building or construction technology or related field from an accredited college or university; OR graduation from high school or possession of a GED AND completion of a three year journeyperson training program or equivalent (equivalency shall be made at the sole discretion of the city of Gilroy).

  • Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).

  • Pass an employment background check including a Department of Justice criminal record check.

  • Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
