$5,306.83 - $7,467.08 Monthly Plus Excellent Benefits 
Additional steps (Step F, Step G, and Step H) included in the salary range listed above are available to employees in this job classification after completion of five years of service (Step F), ten years of service (Step G), and 15 years of service (Step H), and one year at the prior step, and good performance evaluations.  Initial salary placement is typically at the entry point of the range unless the candidate has prior Maintenance Worker experience which may warrant initial placement at a higher step.

Opportunity to work a 9/80 work schedule with every other Friday off.

ABOUT THE POSITION
The City of Gilroy is recruiting for full-time Maintenance Worker I positions within the Public Works Operations Division, with current vacancies in the Streets, Stormwater, Trees, section. New Maintenance Workers will perform a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction duties to support the City's transportation infrastructure, stormwater system, urban forest. Assignments may include street maintenance, storm drain inspection, repair and cleaning, tree maintenance, traffic control, and related public works operations. This recruitment will establish an eligibility list that may be used to fill current and future Maintenance Worker I vacancies within the Public Works Operations Division for up to one year, with the possibility of a one-year extension. The Streets/Stormwater/Trees Section personnel are responsible for maintaining and repairing the City's improved and unimproved streets, curbs and gutters, bikeways, public parking lots and parking lots at City facilities. Streets/Stormwater/Trees also cleans and maintains the stormwater infrastructure throughout the City. Streets/Stormwater/Trees provides the City with 24-hour emergency tree response, neighborhood tree clearance pruning, removal and replacement of dead and unsound trees, planting trees in new subdivisions.

Under direct supervision of the Operations Services Supervisor, this position performs work in one of the following sections as assigned: Parks & Landscape, Streets/ Stormwater/ Trees. Employees in this job classification may rotate/transfer between the sections noted above as determined by the City and will be required to fully meet the job requirements, including the obtaining of certifications, when assigned to a specific for an extended period of time.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL
  • Bring knowledge and hands-on experience in municipal maintenance, including streets, stormwater systems and urban forestry.  
  • Provide excellent customer service by communicating professionally, respectfully, and effectively with residents, coworkers, contractors, and other stakeholders. 
  • Demonstrate strong organizational and recordkeeping skills, including the ability to accurately document work activities using public works computer maintenance management software. 
  • Maintain a safe driving record and demonstrate a commitment to safe vehicle and equipment operation. Possession of a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) at time of hire is highly desirable.  
  • Have experience safely operating a variety of heavy equipment, such as loaders, dump trucks, backhoes, excavators, chippers, or similar equipment.  
  • Possess relevant certifications or training in public works operations, such as a Qualified Applicators Certificate, ISA Arborist certification, Traffic Control/Flagger certification, or other related credentials. 
  • Understand and apply work zone traffic control requirements and safety procedures, including the proper set up and maintenance of safe work zones. 
  • Thrive in a collaborative, team-oriented environment while also working independently with minimal supervision when needed. 
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to workplace safety by following established safety practices, identifying hazards, and promoting a culture of safety. 
  • Be dependable, punctual and accountable, with a proven record of reliability and consistent attendance. 
  • Show initiative and have a “can do” and “get it right the first time” attitude. 
  • Be high energy and excited to perform assigned work. 
  • Have ability to follow both oral and written instructions. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum twelfth (12th) grade education or G.E.D.
  • One (1) year of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience. Prior work for a public agency or other similar service industry preferred, but not required.
  • When subject to assignment on paid standby duty, must reside within sixty (60) minutes normal driving time of the City Corporation Yard. Normal driving time is the most direct route, at the speed limit. 
  • Subject to scheduled seven (7) day paid standby duty on a rotating basis. 
  • Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis. 
  • Possess, at the time of employment, and maintain a valid California’s Class C Driver's License and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
  • Possess and maintain a valid California Class A Driver License within 12 months of hire/transfer. May be required to obtain endorsements. Must participate in the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol Testing program, which includes submission to random drug and alcohol testing at such time the employee possesses a commercial license permit or a commercial license.  
  • Required to obtain a Qualified Applicators Certificate with any one Category within twelve months of hire or transfer.
  • Must demonstrate proficiency in at least one of the following pieces of equipment within twelve months of hire or transfer: backhoe, paint truck, or loader. A training certificate may be required.
  • Pass an employment background check including a Department of Justice criminal record check.
  • Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test. 
  • Prefer non-tobacco user.
