Overview:

Support the Equipment That Protects Our Water Resources.

Valley Water is seeking an Equipment Mechanic II to join our Fleet team. This position performs preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, and repairs on a wide variety of fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, construction equipment, and other power-driven equipment that support Valley Water's operations.

Whether responding to equipment breakdowns, performing scheduled maintenance, or troubleshooting complex mechanical issues, you will play a critical role in ensuring our fleet remains safe, reliable, and ready to support field operations, emergency response, and essential public services.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, fueling, lubrication, and safety checks on fleet vehicles and equipment.
Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair gasoline, diesel, hydraulic, electrical, brake, steering, suspension, transmission, and engine systems.
Respond to equipment breakdowns and urgent repair requests to minimize downtime.
Inspect and prepare new vehicles and equipment for service.
Replace components, perform tune-ups, rebuild mechanical systems, and complete safety inspections.
Operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment safely and effectively.
Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, technical specifications, and repair documentation.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, repair documentation, and parts usage.
Follow all safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work environment.
Perform related duties as assigned in support of Fleet Operations.

Ideal Experience:

Experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on fleet vehicles, heavy equipment, construction equipment, or other power-driven equipment.
Experience diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, engine, brake, or transmission issues.
Experience using diagnostic equipment and repair tools to identify and resolve equipment problems.
Experience responding to equipment breakdowns while maintaining safety, quality, and efficiency.
Experience documenting maintenance activities and repair records.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

Diagnose and repair mechanical and equipment failures.
Perform preventive maintenance efficiently and safely.
Operate hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop machinery.
Read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical documentation.
Prioritize multiple repair assignments in a fast-paced environment.
Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with coworkers and customers.
Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
Follow established safety procedures and safe work practices.

Ideal Knowledge:

Preventive maintenance principles and repair techniques for gasoline, diesel, and alternative fuel vehicles.
Automotive, heavy equipment, and construction equipment systems.
Mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, steering, suspension, brake, cooling, and fuel systems.
Diagnostic methods and troubleshooting techniques.
Safe operation of maintenance tools and shop equipment.
Occupational safety practices applicable to fleet maintenance operations.

Ideal Training and Education:

Equipment Mechanic II

Equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by specialized training in equipment repair, diesel technology, automotive technology, mechanics, or a related field.
Three (3) years of experience performing maintenance and repair of vehicles or mechanical equipment.

Required License or Certificate

Valid California Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Ability to obtain a valid California Class A Driver's License with required endorsements within six (6) months of appointment.

Equipment Management Unit (Position Code 734)
Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.
