Position Duties

The Environmental Services Department is currently seeking one (1) part-time, unbenefited, undergraduate/graduate student intern in ASD's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) group.

Duration of Assignment:
Approximately 1 year with the possibility to extend.

Salary ranges for this classification are:

  • Undergraduate Student Intern: $16.33 - $23.33 hourly
  • Graduate Student Intern: $21.14 - $31.22 hourly

These salary ranges include an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation. Actual salary shall be determined by the final candidates' qualifications and experience.

About the Internship

The Environmental Services Department, Administrative Services Division, Information Technology -Geographic Information Systems (IT-GIS) group is seeking one undergraduate or graduate student intern to support a variety of GIS-related projects and services. The intern will assist with map production, geospatial analysis, record drawing research, data entry, and GIS data maintenance.

The intern may also support field work at the San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility and within the Water Resources Division. Field activities may include collecting utility and asset data, supporting utility locating efforts, and using high-precision GNSS, electro-magnetic induction, and ground-penetrating radar equipment.

This internship is a good opportunity for a student interested in gaining hands-on experience with municipal GIS, utility infrastructure, field data collection, and geospatial data management.

Desired Skills

Ideal candidates will have some knowledge, experience, or understanding of concepts in the following areas:

  • Software such as ArcGIS Pro, Field Maps, ArcGIS Online/ArcGIS Enterprise, and Microsoft products like Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
  • Geospatial data formats such as File Geodatabases, Enterprise Geodatabases, and Shapefiles
  • Concepts such as map projections, scale, vector and raster data, and basic cartographic principles.
  • Basic geospatial analysis techniques such as overlay and buffer analysis.
  • Geospatial editing techniques such as erase, divide, minus, and union.
  • Utilizing GNSS-based equipment to capture geospatial data in the field.
  • Subsurface Utility Engineering and Underground Service Alert processes.
  • One or more scripting/programming languages.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

  • Undergraduate: Current enrollment in an accredited college or university in an undergraduate program. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.
  • Graduate: Completion of a bachelor's degree and current enrollment in a master's degree program from an accredited college or university. Must be enrolled throughout the duration of the internship.

Experience: None. Preference for candidates with geospatial data, data analytics and field collection experience.

Licenses & Certificates: Possession of a valid driver's license authorizing the operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California may be required for some positions.

  • If selected, the Conditional Offer of Employment may be contingent upon you providing proof of a valid State of California driver's license, and an assessment of your California DMV Employer Pull Notice (EPN) as per the DMV Release of Driver Record Information form. Failure to pass the DMV Pull Notice assessment will deem you ineligible for employment.
