The Summer 2025 Internship Program will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while either working on-site or hybrid. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.
About The General Accounting Unit:
The General Accounting Unit safeguards the integrity of the District's financial records, monitors expenditures to budgetary allotments, and reports the financial status of the organization. The unit acts on behalf of Valley Water to ensure that all accounting standards are followed, and reports are filed in accordance with federal and state requirements and Valley Water policies.
The unit provides accurate and timely financial information, payroll services, disbursements management, and revenue collection for Valley Water in compliance with regulatory requirements; maintains and reconciles the financial system with bank accounts; prepares financial statements and coordinates the annual financial audit with external auditors.
INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This internship requires the individual to report in-person. This position is not eligible for a hybrid telework schedule. The intern is expected to report to the office for the duration of the internship.
Required License or Certificate
WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
- Students pursuing a degree in accounting, finance, economics, business or public administration, or a related field.
- Interested in gaining hands-on experience in governmental accounting, auditing, and financial reporting.
- Detail-oriented with strong analytical skills to evaluate accounting transactions and financial statements.
- Effective communicators with the ability to present financial information clearly to diverse audiences.
- Proactive problem-solvers who can research accounting issues, assess alternatives, and make sound recommendations.
- Able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Flexible and adaptable to shifting priorities while maintaining accuracy and compliance.
- Organized and capable of managing multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
- Proficient in using accounting systems, spreadsheets, and financial software.
- Eager to learn about public sector finance, budgeting, and internal controls.
AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
- Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.
- Assist with accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger reconciliation under the guidance of experienced accounting professionals.
- Assist in processing of daily receipts, determining proper coding; preparing journal entries as needed.
- Assist in reviewing credit card transactions for proper supporting documentation and account coding.
- Support the preparation of financial reports, including portions of Valley Water's Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), in accordance with government accounting standards.
- Help analyze financial transactions and assist in reconciling accounts to maintain proper records.
- Participate in audits by gathering documentation and preparing supporting materials for financial reporting.
- Research and apply accounting principles to assist in developing financial statements and reports.
- Gain exposure to internal accounting controls and learn about compliance with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) requirements.
Selection Process
ELIGIBILITY:
The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2025.
- Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.
- Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.
- Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program
- May 27 - August 15, 2025 (Semester Students)
- June 16 - September 5, 2025 (Quarter Students)
