The Summer 2025 Internship Program will provide interns with training and experience leveraging collaboration tools while either working on-site or hybrid. Summer Interns will be given one-on-one mentorship, professional development training and an hourly pay of $26.31. At the end of the program interns are to prepare and present a Capstone presentation to share their experience and achievements.

About The Hydrology, Hydraulics and Geomorphology Unit:

Located throughout the picturesque eastern face of the Santa Cruz Mountains as well as the remote valleys of the Diablo Range, the Hydrology, Hydraulics and Geomorphology Unit operates and maintains a surface water network of 150+ stream, precipitation, and reservoir gages. The unit collects, analyzes and publishes hydrologic data for water supply, flood protection and environmental stewardship within the district. The Groundwater Recharge Program, including maintenance of beneficial environmental flows also heavily benefits from the work completed in the Hydrology, Hydraulics and Geomorphology Unit. The data that is collected and published by the Hydrographers within the unit is used by many internal/external customers within the district and beyond.

INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS: This internship position will require the selected candidate to report on-site at least 80% of the time, adhering to strict safety protocols. Intern must perform their work in the state of California within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in (San Jose, California) by their start date.

WE LOOK FOR INTERNS WHO ARE:
  • Students pursuing a major in Environmental Studies/Science, Science, or a related major.
  • Enjoy being in the field, in remote areas surrounded by the Santa Cruz mountains (sunshine, fresh air, gentle breezes, wildlife).
  • Coursework in Environmental Studies/Sciences
  • Coursework in Hydrology/Water Sciences.

AS AN INTERN YOU WILL:
  • Participate in biweekly learning sessions held every other Friday alongside fellow interns, focusing on elevating career readiness and cultivating professional development skills.
  • Gather field data in remote areas of the Santa Clara County.
  • Drive moderate distances between field sites.
  • Assist in operating and maintaining field equipment for gathering and analyzing hydrologic data.
  • Assist Hydrographers with processing, analyzing, and storing hydrologic data in a Hydrologic Database application while providing data to many internal/external customers.
  • Develop a familiarity with the use of hand tools as well as small power tools.


Selection Process


ELIGIBILITY:

The Summer Internship Program is open to undergraduate & graduate students who are third year and above enrolled in a college/university for Fall 2025.
  • Pass a pre-employment screening process, including a background check.
  • Proof of enrollment will be required prior to start of assignment.
  • Can work full-time (40 hours/week) during the Summer Internship Program
  1. May 27 - August 15, 2025 (Semester Students)
  2. June 16 - September 5, 2025 (Quarter Students)
