Engineering Designer I is the entry level classification in the Engineering Designer series. This position will perform the more routine tasks and duties, including designing less complex facilities and pipeline systems. Individuals can advance to Engineering Designer II after gaining experience and achieving proficiency which meets the requirements for the Engineering Designer II classification. Engineering Designer I's in the Specifications & Engineering Support Section of the Engineering Services Division work closely with Engineering Designer II's, project managers, project engineers, the Facility Drafting Supervisor, surveyors, facility and pipeline drafters, and other technical and administrative personnel. Major responsibilities require the use of initiative, independent judgment, critical thinking and interactions with a variety of personnel throughout East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD).
Typical responsibilities may include:
Using CADD/BIM systems (AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Plant 3D, Revit, MicroStation, etc.) to draft/design new water facilities or rehabilitation of existing facilities for various engineering disciplines (civil, architectural, structural, mechanical and electrical) under the guidance of engineers.
Designing proposed facility projects (reservoirs, pumping plants, rate control stations, raw water pipelines, storm drains), and related facilities using MicroStation or AutoCAD CADD software.
Preparing drawings and designs for facility projects using EBMUD CADD standards, specifications, standard drawing practices, and CADD computer system. Providing drafting services to support the design of facility, including preparing base drawings, design details and final construction as-built drawings.
Requesting the preparation of final drawings by the drafting unit and reviewing these drawings for completeness and accuracy.
Analyzing topographic maps, improvement plans, as-built drawings, system maps, and survey data.
Utilizing a CADD system to perform highly skilled drafting in several engineering specialties, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural engineering; coordinating interdisciplinary drawing packages; ensuring accurate and correct use of various drawing scales.
Providing support to design engineers and planners in preparing preliminary designs for proposed new facilities and improvements to old facilities.
Creating CADD models to assist engineers in analyzing proposed project sites and project alternatives.
Creating 3D models for site evaluation, access road designs, and cut/fill calculations under the direction of an engineer.
Evaluating, implementing, and supporting Building Information Modeling (BIM) and related software and technologies.
Providing support to Facilities Drafting in creating construction drawings and migrating data between various CADD programs and analysis tools.
The ideal candidate will have experience in performing basic drafting tasks and making accurate field observations; creating digital terrain models; and generating site sections and profiles using CADD design tools such as MicroStation, AutoCAD and/or other CADD related software is highly desirable. Experience with civil design software packages, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and AutoCAD Revit is also desirable. The ability to generate and complete design sketches and notations into readable, clear, and well-organized drawings, plans and details using CAD design tools is also desirable.
The salary range is $8,987 per month increasing to $9,436, $9,908, $10,403, and $10,923 after 6, 18, 30 and 42 months, respectively.

Requirements:
1. Completion of the twelfth grade or its equivalent; AND
2. Experience in any or a combination of designing, drafting, mapping, or field recording of pipeline, facilities, or water/wastewater treatment system installations; or one year as a crew worker installing or maintaining underground pipelines, facilities, or water/wastewater treatment systems; or some experience as a member of a pipeline location survey crew operating surveying instruments or water/wastewater system inspection.
3. Possession of a valid California driver's license and satisfactory driving record.
