Join an industry-leading water supply and wastewater utility as a Paving Raker A. East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) offers an excellent work environment with state-of-the-art construction projects and challenging assignments. Paving Rakers spread and rake asphaltic paving materials in making permanent repairs to street surfaces and/or perform asphalt and concrete pavement saw cutting.
Typical duties include loading, unloading, transportation and operation of up to 48" asphalt/concrete flat saws up to 1,800 lbs.; proper containment, collection and disposal of saw cutting slurry; maintain accurate saw cutting production records; spraying an oil coating into cuts prior to the application of paving materials; directing the spreading of asphalt and cement from a supply truck into the prepared cut or spreader boxes; ability to demonstrate the proper knowledge and experience required to operate spreader boxes; raking paving materials into proper quantities and into desired locations in preparation for first passes by a street roller; and removing or adding materials to voids or uneven surfaces between roller passes until surfaces are well-knit, smooth and fully compacted. A significant portion of anticipated work will require the immediate use of a concrete/asphalt flat saw.
Paving Rakers also direct and train helpers; engage and participate in on-the-job training; assist in loading and unloading materials, supplies, and equipment; direct the roller operator in the compaction of materials; visually inspect surface and leveling; keep records and reports that show time of completed assignments, delivery location, materials hauled and similar data; and ensure that street barricades, safety cones, and other safety devices are properly placed and removed.

Demonstrate skill and proficiency in safely and efficiently securing worksites, preparing surfaces for paving and spreading, raking and rolling asphaltic paving materials.
Safely and effectively load, unload, secure and transport various materials and equipment.
Safely and efficiently direct the operation of equipment such as spreader boxes, paving rollers, concrete saws, and light trucks with trailers and oilers.
Work cooperatively as a crew member and interact effectively with the public and other EBMUD staff.
The salary range is $7,937 per month increasing to $8,334, $8,751 and $9,189 after 12, 24, and 36 months, respectively.

Requirements:
1. Completion of the eighth grade, or its equivalent; AND
2. One year of experience as a laborer on an asphalt paving crew and/or on a concrete/asphalt saw cutting crew.
3. Must possess a valid, unrestricted California driver's license and have a satisfactory driving record.
4. Must be willing to work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions and in proximity to traffic, poison oak, and insects.
5. Must be physically capable of operating a variety of hand and power tools, including a pavement breaker weighing approximately 90 pounds and capable of sustained shoveling of dirt, gravel or asphalt.
6. Must be willing to work overtime on an extended shift as needed.
