SUMMARY
Under general supervision, performs skilled mechanical maintenance, installation, troubleshooting, and repair work in a modern wastewater treatment facility with remote pumping stations; assists in the development of programs for preventive and corrective maintenance, and improvements of all mechanical systems and equipment.
Assists in the operation and maintains multi-fuel (natural gas, digester gas) reciprocating engine- generators, digester gas collection, storage, delivery, and flaring systems, hot water boiler system, and digester gas treatment system.
May be assigned to be on standby during off hours or called in to work in the evenings, nights, and days and/or on weekends, including holidays.
Every employee appointed to a position at SVCW shall serve at the will and pleasure of the appointing authority.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Routine duties include starting and stopping the cogeneration units, paralleling operations of the cogeneration engines with the utility (PG&E), operation/maintenance of gas-fired boilers, gas compressors, cooling towers and automated pumping and piping systems related to the operation of the plant.
- Adjusts engine loads, boiler and hot water loop temperature settings and flows, gas treatment settings, and gas storage and usage level.
- Investigates and inspects power plant equipment for conditions which may require repairs; reads work plans, drawings, system diagrams, and specifications; diagnoses reasons for equipment malfunctions and failures and reports observed operating difficulties.
- Performs major maintenance and repair including but not limited to removal and reinstallation of heads, fuel pumps, injectors, turbochargers, gas compressors and ancillary equipment/components; works with other staff and contractors as required; shuts down and starts up equipment as required for repairs or maintenance.
- Utilizes a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) Wonderware computer console to monitor and input commands to control the Cogeneration System.
- From work orders, drawings, specifications, and verbal instructions, performs a variety of complex Fabricates parts, fittings and assemblies used in the repair and optimization of treatment plant and pump station facilities, treatment process units, and control systems.
- Performs troubleshooting, repair, maintenance, and installation work for mechanical, plumbing, and structural aspects of wastewater treatment plant facilities and
- Works as a SVCW team member in all efforts involving preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance, repair, and installation of SVCW's facilities' process systems, structures, and equipment. May be assigned to assist other skilled positions and Divisions at the treatment

- Recommends and helps implement improved work methods, equipment maintenance procedures, and improvements to the wastewater facilities.
- Provides mechanical safety and skills training to Plant Mechanics and other staff, ensures compliance with safety regulations, responds to emergencies.

Knowledge of:

- Learn the methods, practices and safe operation of equipment used in building maintenance, repair services, and activities including variety of building trades

- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and writing in the English
- Learn and observe all appropriate SVCW safety policies and procedures as required by SVCW including, but not limited to, Cal/OSHA General Industry Safety Orders.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or an equivalent certificate or diploma recognized by the State of California.
Minimum of three (3) years' experience in skilled mechanical maintenance work involving mechanical repair and installation. Knowledge of the tasks performed by equipment maintenance staff in wastewater treatment facilities and industrial settings.
Must possess at minimum a California Water Environment Association (CWEA) Grade II Mechanical Technologist Certification or have experience and/or education equivalent to a journey level mechanic.
Possess and hold a valid California Class C Driver's License.
PHYSICAL TASKS and ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Work involves working in indoor and outdoor conditions. The employee works at heights, uses hand and power tools, and works with and around machinery having moving parts. The employee is exposed to outside weather conditions, to gases, fumes, and odors, and to untreated and partially treated wastewater. The employee operates light utility vehicles, including a variety of powered vehicles, forklifts, and special purpose equipment. The noise level in the work environment may be moderate to loud.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, and climb. The employee frequently is required to use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The employee is required to stand and walk. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
