Positions & Duties
Per the City's COVID19 Mandatory Vaccination Policy, the City requires all employees starting on or after February 11, 2022, to provide proof of vaccination as a condition of employment absent a documented medical and/or religious exemption. Proof of vaccination means that employees are required to be "up-to-date" with regards to the COVID-19 vaccine. Consistent with the Santa Clara County Public Health Order issued on December 28, 2021, "up-to-date" means that an employee is not only "fully vaccinated," but has also obtained any booster doses of a COVID-19 vaccination for which they are eligible, within 15 days of first becoming eligible. The actual salary shall be determined by the final candidate's qualifications and experience. In addition to the starting salary, employees in the Wastewater Operator classification shall also receive an approximate five percent (5%) ongoing non-pensionable compensation pay.
The Environmental Services Department (ESD) manages the San Jose/Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. Built in 1956, the Facility is a round-the-clock operation that cleans an average of 110 million gallons of wastewater per day and has the capacity to clean up to 167 million gallons per day. The department serves eight cities with 1.4 million residents and a business sector with more than 17,000 main sewer connections.
Our wastewater undergoes a sophisticated 10.5-hour treatment process that simulates the way nature cleans water. The Facility removes 99 percent of the impurities before the cleaned water is discharged into the South San Francisco Bay or recycled for other uses such as industrial processes, cooling towers, and flushing toilets.
The Facility is the largest advanced wastewater treatment facility in the western United States. Advanced (tertiary) level treatment is necessary to meet our region's strict state regulations for the shallow waters and sensitive ecosystem of the southern Bay.
The City of San Jose Environmental Services Department is seeking qualified candidates to fill flexibly staffed Wastewater Operator vacancies at the San Jose/Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility. Wastewater Operators work in an industrial environment where they operate various types of process equipment that removes hazardous and harmful pollution from wastewater coming from households, businesses, and industries. Wastewater Operators inspect, operate, and maintain equipment in process areas, take samples for process control and read, interpret gauges, dials and other process instruments to make necessary process and equipment adjustments. They ensure that the final product, which is clean water, meets federal and state environmental and safety regulatory standards before the water flows back to the San Francisco Bay. Wastewater Operators staff the facility 24/7, 365 days a year, and are assigned to 12-hour operating shifts. Applicants for this position must be available to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime.
Physical Requirement
Ability to perform the essential physical functions of this position will be determined by a post-offer medical examination conducted by City of San Jose Employee Health Services.
Minimum Qualifications
Wastewater Operator I:
Education and Experience: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) and one (1) year experience as a Wastewater Operator Trainee with the City of San José or one (1) year experience at a Wastewater treatment facility with similar processes.
Acceptable Substitution: None.
Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.): Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Operator Grade I or higher Certificate and possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.
Wastewater Operator II:
Education and Experience: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) and one (1) year experience as a Wastewater Operator I with the City of San José or one (1) year experience at a Wastewater treatment facility with similar processes while holding a valid SWRCB Wastewater Grade I or higher license.
Acceptable Substitution: None.
Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.): Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Operator Grade II or higher Certificate and possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.
Wastewater Operator III
Education and Experience: Completion of high school or equivalent (General Education Development [GED] Test or California Proficiency Certificate) and one (1) year experience as a Wastewater Operator II with the City of San José or two (2) years' experience at a Wastewater treatment facility with similar processes while holding a valid SWRCB Wastewater Grade II or higher license.
Acceptable Substitution: None.
Required Licensing (such as driver's license, certifications, etc.): Possession of a valid California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Operator Grade III or higher Certificate and possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.

The annual salary range for Wastewater Operator I is $80,870.40 - 100,734.40
The annual salary range for Wastewater Operator II is $85,779.20 - $107,140.80.
The annual salary range for Wastewater Operator III is $90,812.80 - $113,464,
